Words of Hope — Heaven Minded
Dad met with his doctor for the last time in July. A cancer doctor is such a massive part of a cancer patient’s life. My dad had several cancer doctors, a number who have prayed and cried with him on his journey. After his last doctor’s visit, hospice came to the house. They carried in a hospital bed and asked where to place it. My dad has a beautiful home with stunning views of Spokane. He has many great places to put the bed, but he wanted it set in a small room with nothing but white walls and a window. The room was small and stark compared to the rest of the house.
At the time, I wondered why dad didn’t want to position his bed to see the sunset or sunrise, the expanse of Spokane. I believe now; Dad was letting go of all the earthly reminders to walk forward into a more beautiful future.
As we have been donating Dad’s clothes and some of his items, I thought none of this matters. Cars, clothes, watches, houses— they all are dust. Scripture says, If you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.”
When dad arranged his bed, he was setting his mind on things above. He surrounded himself with only what is eternal— God and his family. I now look at my possessions from a different vantage point and want to learn the lessons Dad taught me as he prepared to go home to God. I want that heavenly mindset.
“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”
