Words of Hope: Meditating on Comfort

There is a bridge in Prague that is one of the most famous in the world. Near one end is a metal statue, most of the others are entirely of stone. It is Christ on the cross looking down toward those walking near that portion of the bridge. He is surrounded by the women who have stayed with Him as He dies.

I consider the women attending Him. What was their presence like for Jesus?

As I sit with this question, I immediately picture my dad laying down on the hardwood floor of my living room. He has just walked from his house to mine and is feeling ill and discouraged.

Ariana my daughter is about seven. She kneels near his shoulder and holds his face. She starts to sing to him.

Comfort means to strengthen and give hope. As I picture the women at the cross and young child Ariana singing to my father, I consider what God is asking of me.

What comfort can I give to those who are struggling?

What comfort do I need?

Does the way I attempt to comfort provide strength and hope?

As you navigate your week, I invite you to sit with the image of Christ on the cross. He looks at you as you walk by. What might He be asking you?

“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” – Luke 19:25
