Words of Hope: First Word Joy

I have a sign on my office door that I made that reads, “First Word Joy.” I consider how differently my day begins when I select to focus on delight in God, life, and people. How surprising the contrast is when I choose frustration, complaint, fear, or resentment.

I stood in line at the supermarket. A husband and wife were in line behind me so that I could clearly hear their conversation. They were talking about groceries. He said to her, “You’re a Froot Loop.”  She paused as she knew others could hear what he said. He was smiling and meaning it as a playful joke.  “Well, you’re a Frosted Flake,” She replied more with an edge. It was clear they were heading out of fun and into personal territory.

As I moved out of line, I heard him say, “So are you saying I’m a flake?”  The playful tone in his voice was gone.

I thought about this exchange. How often do I want to be funny, rather than consider how to be kind, or I want to get my way, or when hurt assume the worst and take revenge? How easily the moment slides from the pleasant outing to a feeling of being slighted or the temptation to nurse a grudge.

Let’s imagine the man had said, “You are a fresh picked red rose,” or even “You are my Froot Loops on a day of oatmeal.” And she said, “Whatever food you remind me of, I adore you.”

How differently language affects us, and how easily we can slide into criticism.

What if the first word I use to greet the day is joy to God for His many blessings? What if all my first thoughts are grateful ones? What if the words I speak to others begin with delight for them and for this very moment?

Rejoice always.

Pray continually.

Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus
