Words of Hope: Creative Affirmations

Scripture tells us, “In the beginning was the word and the word was God.” I consider the coding of our DNA, I consider the world of words, the messages that speak to us day and night. Some words fill us with joy and hope, some with despair.

I like to imagine a conversation I would have with Dad around words. Dad LOVED words. He believed in speaking words of goodness and love. Most of the work he did in the world happened through his words, his letter writing, phone calls, text messages, and Words of Hope.

He built NBC Camps around the value of words, especially ones we say to ourselves and to others. What is our internal dialogue?  What do we say to others? Does it inspire or discourage?

Our focus as a staff this month is on the word “Creativity.” We are using the book “The Artist’s Way” as a tool to increase our creativity. The section we are in now is all about the power of words. The author, Julia Cameron, invites us to consider the negative blurts that block our thinking. “I can’t do this, I don’t have time, I am not creative.”  She also invites us into speaking affirmations. She and Dad would have been best buddies. I can imagine Dad getting energized about these affirmations. In honor of him, the NBC team speaks these aloud each day.

Here are a few of her affirmations I find especially inspiring.

  • I am a channel for God’s creativity and my work comes to good.
  • My dreams come from God and God has the power to accomplish them.
  • As I create and listen, I will be led.

These are words of hope. They are words that bring healing. Along with her affirmations, I pray John 1:1-5 aloud today and ask the Word of God will live and reign in my heart so that I can be Christ’s words to the world.

In the beginning there was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made by him, and nothing was made without him. In him there was life, and that life was the light of all people. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it. – John 1:1-5
